Marubeni Pharmaceuticals Corporation (Head Office: Tokyo, Japan; President & COO: Shigeyuki Nishinaka; hereinafter “Marubeni Pharmaceuticals”) announced today that its subsidiary, Marubeni Pharmaceuticals Taiwan Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “MPTW”), has launched GEMTESA® (Vibegron; hereinafter the “Product”) in Taiwan for the treatment of overactive bladder (“OAB”).
The Product is a once-daily oral selective β3-adrenergic receptor agonist. It selectively acts on β3 receptors in the bladder and relaxes the bladder, thereby enhancing bladder storage function and improving symptoms associated with OAB, including urinary urgency, urinary frequency and urge urinary incontinence.
In Taiwan, the Product is used for the treatment of adult patients with OAB, as well as adult male patients with OAB who are receiving treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (“BPH”). The Product received New Drug Application approval from Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) in April 2025 and an Imported Drug License in July 2025. Following preparations for hospital listings and the establishment of a system to provide healthcare professionals with information on the appropriate use of the Product, MPTW commenced commercial sales of the Product on September 22, 2026.
In 2023, Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. obtained from KYORIN Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. exclusive rights to develop, manufacture and commercialize Vibegron in certain Asian regions.
Subsequently, effective July 31, 2025, Sumitomo Pharma’s contractual rights and obligations relating to its Asia business, including its contractual position under the relevant license agreement, were succeeded by Marubeni Pharmaceuticals through an absorption-type company split.
Building on the launch by MPTW, Marubeni Pharmaceuticals will continue its efforts to expand the availability of this product across Asia and provide patients in need with access to this treatment option throughout the region.
About GEMTESA® (Vibegron)
GEMTESA® is a once-daily oral selective β3-adrenergic receptor agonist. By selectively acting on β3 receptors in the bladder, it relaxes the bladder during the storage phase and increases bladder capacity, thereby improving OAB symptoms, including urinary urgency, urinary frequency and urge urinary incontinence. In Taiwan, the Product is used for adult patients with OAB and adult male patients with OAB who are receiving treatment for BPH.
About Overactive Bladder (OAB)
OAB is a symptom syndrome characterized by urinary urgency, usually accompanied by urinary frequency and nocturia, with or without urge urinary incontinence. Concerns about access to toilets and disruption of sleep may interfere with daily life and reduce patients’ QOL.
About Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
BPH is an age-related condition in which the prostate becomes enlarged. It may be associated with voiding symptoms, such as a weak urinary stream and difficulty urinating, as well as storage symptoms, including urinary urgency, urinary frequency and nocturia. OAB symptoms may persist in some patients receiving treatment for BPH and may negatively affect QOL.
